Wah!

Camphone 22, originally uploaded by Sabine Dukes.

My laptop is dead...long live my laptop.

Well, less than 24 hours after learning that my laptop would be an expensive fix (i've been wanting a new one anyway because all the photo editing has been stretching it the hilt) I bought a new laptop.

I researched, read reviews, comparison shopped, and plunked down the cash within 24 hours!

Thats a new record for me. I don't make these decisions easily. I usually have to ferret out every piece of information on the subject possible and twist and turn the data and do various scenario analysis and then change my mind 37 times.

But, not having a laptop was a serious hitch in my life. I was motivated. The computer on my desk has spider webs. Thats because sitting at a desk longer than absolutely necessary sucks ass.

I do all my surfing, emailing and photo-ing in 4 places: bed, couch, patio, hotel room.

So I got all impulsive and bought a new one.

And now I am questioning my hasty decision.

Because I did not buy a laptop. Not unless you count Andre the Giant's lap in the assessment. Its more like a suitcase computer. This thing is HUUUUGE. Michael warned me not to pick it up by the monitor (which probably led to the early demise of my old computer) and my new computer weighs so much that it would give me a hernia to even try.

And I hate Windows Vista.

And stupid controls that don't let you see hidden files.

And moving the backspace and delete key to new places.

But I LOVE that big ol mackdaddy 17" widescreen monitor. Not as much as I love chocolate, or Michael, or beer (not necessarily in that order), but its up there.

OH, you got a VAIO? Scott would totally approve. Did you get a pretty color VAIO? I think they had some lime green ones...but maybe not in size gynormous.

Vista does suck. Dreamweaver is still highly unstable on it and by now, I actually KNOW the keystrokes to cause it to crash in Vista. All Adobe products will be horrid on Vista, unless they've upgraded them by now...I'm still on CS2 cuz i'm too lazy/broke to upgrade.

I am sooooo not going to get into the apple vs pc battle. But suffice it to say, I am a pc girl, just pretendin at all this creative stuff.

And Julie, Adobe has updates for Vista compatibility, except I dunno if they have it for older versions. I am only using elements and lightroom and we'll see if it works.

Andy, yes it does. We have it hooked up to the tv right now so I can grab my files from it.

i have Parallels on my mac. with the push of a button (which i rarely do) my screen looks like a cube and rotates to Windows...pretty cool

I'm a total MacGirl, but I can imagine that if you do the worky work on a PC, that switching back and forth all the times would be kinda annoying. John gets on my Mac, and gets all baffled, never mind he's a software dorky dork (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Yay for new toys!

yeah, and springing for two operating systems plus the resources they consume just didnt make sense to me.

Heck, Im still saving my pennies for Photoshop which is a $600 program. $600 for software! Thats like, a set of really nice race wheels.

And Julie, right click on yur program icon and in the properties you can switch it to run as if in XP.

I think we're all pretty much dorky dorks

Am I the only person out there who likes the teeny-tiny fit-in-my-purse laptops? I made the mistake of going with a recommendation by my dad when my last laptop died...the screen is huge. It doesn't fit in any of my bags or any standard laptop cases. It is not really that portable, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop...

Elis, they had the cutest little laptop at the Sony outlet. It was adorable! I would love a wee machine like that for travel and stuff.

Myself, I needed the big mack daddy screen for photo editing. Even my old 15 wasn't enough. Otherwise, I would have totally gotten that wee little Vaio.

I solve the problem with a teeny laptop, but use a bigger monitor at home - doesn't work for couch or bed, though.

What you really need is a screensaver with Michael holding a Belgian beer in one hand and chocolate in the other!

Ack, yes, photoshop is silly money. Adobe has always kinda been like that. I had a copy for windows for a while from work, but that was eons ago. I wish the software fairy would come to my house.

Mac/Windows, sorta like Campy/Shimano. Hard to change once you commit.

Bridging the digital divide, I've got a wee PC laptop for work and a humongoid iMac for home--I guess it's sorta like the English/French thing back home. The PC is the anglo (boring, but controls all the money) while the Mac is the francophone (generally cool but in the minority).

I used to be a Mac girl...hell...I grew up on Mac in college...Apple IIc baby...yes, i'm THAT old. I even worked at Claris for a while...so I can't shoot them down. Macs are the bomb. but only for like a year and maybe ONE system upgrade. that's the problem for me... I don't like having to upgrade hardware until everything in my universe requires it...like all the rest of my software...I had my laptop PC for 5 years and 3 system upgrades: XP, Win 98 and the one before that. If you need serious work done w/o hassle of constant hardware upgrade, sigh, it's a PC.

and i'm too scardy to upgrade to adobe vista compaitables yet. the PDF upgrade brought ALL my adobe products to a complete hault. that was fun for someone who runs a biz using all adobe products...i may try the right clicky thing tho...
