so here's my theory, but it took some heavy thinking...
anyway, the theory is that if it is just a giggly ride, then tailwind last. That way you can go however slow you want in the headwind, and feel like superwoman in the tailwind.
If its a hard workout, then tailwind first. The tailwind will get me out and take me further and warm me up. The headwind will kick my otherwise lazy ass.
Yesterday was a hard workout so I chose tailwind first. 28mph during intervals. That same effort on the way back? 12mph.
I always choose tail last, head first. (wow that sounds naaasty and I don't mean it that way!!!)
What I mean is take on the toughest part of the ride first when your legs are fresh. I don't believe I get training benefits from the death march, if I need the head wind to be part of the strength build of my intervals then I finish them with the head wind and cool down with the tail wind.
The tail wind lets me work on my spin even tho the leggies are tie tie and I don't compromise form.
That's how I deal with the dilemna. Anyway your bloggie title could be...head first, tail last, haa haa.
My vote goes for a definate tailwind on the way home. That way you can load up the legs, fry yourself, but know all the while that the longer you ride, the longer you get to sail back home turning some wicked fast RPMs. If you save the headwind for last you will just hate life and wish you had less pride so you could call and ask someone to come pick you up.
... or you could just come up here to the east bay, where no matter which way you ride it seems to always be a headwind.

is it nice and steady or is it one of those winds that could shift on you and turn around?
are you by yourself?
is it sunny or cold or both?
did you eat a big breakfast?
i'm so indecisive
i'm glad you asked after the fact so it doesn't matter
Start with the tailwind, or in the eye of the hurricane. It's all about getting out the door.
that was my thought too, the tail wind first.
although leave time for that long, hard, slow, windy ride home...
